The fantasy football world collectively gasped during "Thursday Night Football" when Patrick Mahomes went down with a knee injury on a QB sneak attempt early in the second quarter. The injury was later revealed to be a dislocated right kneecap that will cost Mahomes at least three weeks, if not longer.
The loss of Mahomes is obviously a devastating blow to his fantasy owners, as he was the consensus QB1 in fantasy this season. Mahomes was off to another remarkable start, leading the NFL in passing yards and tied for first in TDs, although he had been hampered by an ankle injury in recent weeks.
With Mahomes out for three games and possibly longer (pending and MRI), depending on the extent of any possible ligament damage, owners will need to find a backup option for the weeks ahead. Here are three quarterbacks, all owned in less than 50 percent of Yahoo! Fantasy Football leagues, to consider signing off the waiver wire.
3. Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts
The first positive in picking up Indianapolis Colts QB Jacoby Brissett is that he has already had his bye week. Brissett has been solid, if not spectacular so far, as the QB17 in fantasy points per game. He had his lowest-scoring performance of the year in Week 5 against the Chiefs, but prior to that had totaled at least two touchdowns in every game. Brissett comes out of his bye with a very favorable matchup against the Houston Texans (who give up the fifth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks) and has some other exploitable spots remaining, including the Texans again, the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
2. Daniel Jones, New York Giants
The man they call Danny Dimes, New York Giants QB Daniel Jones exploded onto the fantasy scene in his first NFL start back in Week 3, carving up the Buccaneers for 336 passing yards and four total touchdowns. Jones has struggled in three games since, but has also been without several key skill players due to injury. His outlook will improve as his teammates get healthier, and Jones does have a dream matchup in Week 7 against the Arizona Cardinals, who give up the most fantasy points to quarterbacks. His bye won't come until Week 11, meaning Jones can be a solid stopgap if Mahomes' injury keeps only keeps him out for the initial low-end projection of three weeks.
1. Sam Darnold, New York Jets
As with Brissett, one benefit in picking up Sam Darnold is that he has already had his bye week. The second-year New York Jets QB made his return from Mononucleosis in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys and impressed with 338 yards and two touchdowns. While Darnold has it tough over the next two weeks, with games against the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars, the Jets' schedule is arguably the best in fantasy football from Week 9 on. From that point, they will face the Miami Dolphins (twice), New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals over the next six weeks. The schedule alone makes Darnold one of the best pickups in fantasy football, whether you just lost Mahomes or not.
