Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco was diagnosed with an undisclosed blood condition Tuesday afternoon, forcing him to step away from all baseball activities as he seeks treatment. As a result, the Cleveland Indians placed the ailing ace on the 10-Day injured list with no definite timetable for his return.
The news is sad to hear for baseball fans and has left his fantasy owners wondering how they're going to stay competitive without the 32-year-old righty. Luckily, there are a few quality pitchers still available on the waiver wire that can be the replacement Carrasco owners need.
Here are three waiver-wire replacements, who are available in at least 50 percent of Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball leagues, for Carrasco.
3. Griffin Canning, Los Angeles Angels
Although he's just a rookie, Griffin Canning has established himself as the ace of the Angels staff. The 23--year-old sports an excellent 42/10 strikeout-to-walk ratio this year and has done a great job of limiting base runners as of late, possessing a 0.94 WHIP over his last three starts. With a one more start later this week at home against the Seattle Mariners, Canning can provide your team with an immediate turnaround if you add him fast enough (Available in 55 percent of Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball leagues).
2. Jimmy Nelson, Milwaukee Brewers
It's been a long journey back to the Majors thanks to nasty shoulder injury, but Jimmy Nelson is finally ready to take the mound again. There's definitely a little bit of rust after a year off from baseball, if his season debut against the Miami Marlins is any indication. However, if he can eventually rediscover his breakout 2017 form, high-win and quality-start totals are definitely in the cards for Nelson with a potent Brewers lineup providing him with run support. Nelson is still available in 68 percent of Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball leagues.
1. Eric Lauer, San Diego Padres
Eric Lauer has been absolutely lights out since the middle of May and is probably the best replacement you can find for Carrasco as of this moment. In his last four starts, the 25-year-old southpaw sports a perfect 4-0 record with a 1.50 ERA and 0.83 WHIP while holding batters to a minuscule .195 batting average against. Lauer won't produce the high strikeout totals like Carrasco has, but his dominance on the mound should be enough to rack up highly coveted wins and quality starts. Lauer is available 75 percent of Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball leagues.
