3 Most Likely Replacements for Taylor Heinicke in 2022
By Larry Rupp

The Washington Football Team has only one quarterback currently under contract in 2022 and that is Taylor Heinicke. However, the team has a ton of projected available cap space to work with and a rebrand coming up. It wouldn't be surprising to see the front office bring in some competition.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently reported that Washington may be the perfect landing spot for a veteran signal-caller looking for a new home. Of course, there's no shortage of options out there. With that in mind, here are three of the most likely replacements for Taylor Heinicke.
Taylor Heinicke Replacements
1. Jimmy Garoppolo
The pairing between Jimmy Garoppolo and the Washington Football Team makes too much sense here. The San Francisco 49ers are likely looking to move their starting quarterback in order to start Trey Lance. Garoppolo has led his team to two NFC Championship appearances in the last three seasons and owns a career record of 33-14 as a starter. He has also thrown 71 touchdowns compared to 38 interceptions across eight NFL seasons. Meanwhile, Heinicke struggled with consistency in 2021 and did not look like a player that could lead his team to a Super Bowl. It likely wouldn't cost Washington a ton of capital to acquire Jimmy G, which makes it tough to find a real downside in this scenario.
2. Russell Wilson
Washington could opt to go all-in and acquire Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks instead of sticking with Heinicke. Wilson's name has been floated around the trade market for months now after rumors swirled he was in search of a fresh start. There's no doubt that the Super Bowl-winning QB would happy to join a team that features one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Terry McLaurin finished with over 1,000 receiving yards for the second straight season despite shaky quarterback play. When it comes down to it, Wilson has a ton of NFL experience and has played in 16 playoff contests. His knowledge and leadership alone would catapult Washington up the rankings in the NFC East division.
3. Jameis Winston
There is another option besides making a trade and that is signing a QB in free agency. This class is not filled with big names, but Jameis Winston sticks out a potential replacement in Washington. The seven-year pro looked vastly improved in his seven starts this past fall before a knee injury ended his season. He threw 14 touchdowns compared to just 3 interceptions and kept the New Orleans Saints in games. After all, that is all Washington wants from its starter. This is a team that has started 13 different QBs since Kirk Cousins left the team in 2017. Taking a gamble on Winston may be what it takes to turn finally things around at the position.
