The Houston Texans currently have more than $50 million in available cap space. But with extensions likely looming for high-priced players like Laremy Tunsil, that space could disappear quite quickly.
Houston still has a loaded roster, though, and making the right additions could help get this team over the top. So let's take a look at three low-cost free agents the team should target this offseason.
3. Delanie Walker
In 2019, no Texans' tight end had more than 420 receiving yards. Delanie Walker might not be the player he once was, but he's still capable of getting it done at a pretty high level. Having missed a combined 24 games in the past two seasons, he should be available on the cheap now that he's been released by the Tennessee Titans.
2. Ronald Darby
Ronald Darby used to be considered a top-tier cornerback, but he fell off in a pretty big way last season. When targeted in coverage, he allowed a 116.8 passer rating last year (down from 86.7 in 2018). Injuries had a lot to do with that though, and he only played 11 games last season. A low-cost, high-upside gamble on a talent like Darby could make a ton of sense.
1. Trumaine Johnson
Another talented cornerback coming off a bad stretch, Trumaine Johnson could be an intriguing gamble for the Texans. He was just released by the New York Jets after a horrendous two-year stint with the team, but he racked up 15 interceptions over the first four seasons of his career. In fact, he even had four INTs in just 10 games with the Jets in 2018. While he's not nearly as consistent as he used to be, he's still a ballhawk who has a chance to rejuvenate his career with a change of scenery.
