The Miami Dolphins have holes all over the roster. While running back is far from their most pressing need, it might be the position they're weakest at. Last season, no Dolphins running back had more than 202 rushing yards, and Ryan Fitzpatrick was the teams leading rusher with just 243 yards.
In fact, Miami had the league's lowest-graded rushing attack, per Football Outsiders' DVOA metrics. So with that in mind, here are three running backs the team should target in NFL free agency.
3. Matt Breida
He's not nearly as accomplished as some of the other names on this list, but Matt Breida should be available at a fraction of the cost. While fumbling issues limited his playing time last season, he was always effective when given the chance, averaging at least 5.1 yards per carry in each of his last two seasons. If Miami wants to address the position without breaking the bank, Breida might be its best bet.
2. Derrick Henry
Derrick Henry isn't likely to come to Miami, but that shouldn't stop the team from pursuing him. His talents were on full display down the stretch, averaging 164.3 rushing yards per contest over his final four games of the season (including the playoffs). He's going to get rewarded handsomely for that effort, and if it's money he's after, no one has more of it to spend than the Dolphins.
1. Melvin Gordon
Melvin Gordon held out last season because he couldn't reach a long-term contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. It looks like they're going to let him walk in free agency this offseason, as the team elected to sign Austin Ekeler to a four-year deal. Well, if it's money Gordon is looking for, Miami has more cap space than any other team in the NFL. With a clear need, and a boatload of available space, Gordon would be a great fit in Miami.
