NFL training camp is right around the corner, which means veterans and rookies alike are going to be battling it out for the last few roster spots available.

Green Bay Packers insider Rob Demovsky recently revealed one veteran free agent signing in danger of being cut before Week 1 arrives.

Green Bay Packers News

Demovsky pointed out that wide receiver Sammy Watkins is no lock to make the Week 1 roster. The Packers have little invested in the 29-year-old considering the signing bonus on his one-year deal is $350,000. Keep in mind the front office also reshaped the entire position through the 2022 NFL Draft.

Christian Watson is expected to make an immediate impact as a rookie after accumulating over 2,000 receiving yards in his college career. Romeo Doubs and Samari Toure could move up the depth chart with a strong camp showing, too, which would make Watkins a cut candidate as the odd man out.

This is a very similar situation to when Green Bay cut veteran wideout Devin Funchess loose just prior to the start of the 2021 season. The coaching staff has continued to stress the importance of youth and giving quarterback Aaron Rodgers the best chance to efficiently move the ball down the field.

Watkins has logged 5,135 yards from scrimmage and 34 touchdowns over the course of his eight-year career. However, he hasn't finished with over 425 yards in a season since 2019 and averaged a career-low 30.3 yards per game in 2021. Watkins will need to step up over the next two months.

The Packers have odds set at +1200 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
