There have been some dramatic changes in MLB player futures and the NL Cy Young race this season. And September has provided another magical run for Max Scherzer as he pursues his fourth Cy Young award and third in the National League.
On Sunday, Scherzer became the 19th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 strikeouts. The 37-year-old is now the favorite to win the National League Cy Young award. Scherzer was +1500 on September 1 and trailed Dodgers teammate Walker Buehler, according to FanDuel Sportsbook NL Cy Young odds timeline
Scherzer leads the NL with a 2.17 ERA adn 0.82 WHIP. His 12.2 strikeout per nine innings trails only Corbin Burnes. Scherzer is 14-4 this season, and since the trade to the LA Dodgers the end of July, Scherzer is 6-0 for the Dodgers with a 0.88 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and .158 batting average against.
Scherzer has passed Walker Buehler, who was widening his lead as the favorite to start September. And remember a month ago when Zach Wheeler was leading the Cy Young race and Scherzer was +1600?
In July, Jacob deGrom was the dominant Cy Young favorite at -550 odds before elbow inflammation ended his season and a near certain third Cy Young award for him since 2018.
Now the NL Cy Young trophy is in Max Scherzer's to lose heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
