Atlanta Falcons linebacker Deion Jones has been involved in recent trade rumors due to his contract and an abysmal 2021 performance. Unfortunately, Jones' trade value has tanked following Thursday's injury news.
Falcons head coach Arthur Smith revealed on Thursday that Jones will miss the entire offseason as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Atlanta was hoping to move him within the next couple of weeks, but there's little chance that teams will want to trade for him until he steps on a football field.
Deion Jones Injury Update
Jones is scheduled to make $20.018 million during the upcoming campaign. The Falcons were hoping to trade him after June 1 because it would allow them to free up just over $13.6 million.
It was already tough enough to find a trade partner following Jones' uninspiring 2021 campaign that saw him finish with 137 tackles, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. He finished without an interception for the first time in his career while also missing 17 tackles — the highest total of his last four seasons.
Now, it's looking like the Falcons will could potentially cut the former Pro-Bowler. They'd only free up about $1.07 million by moving on this way, but it's better than being stuck with a player that's playing well below his pricetag.
Jones' injury return timetable has yet to be revealed, making it unlikely for Falcons fans to hear any more updates about his 2022 playing future until A) his rehab progresses or B) Atlanta decides to cuts him.
