Thanks to a strong preseason showing and relative lack of competition on the depth chart, Dameon Pierce's fantasy stock has been on the rise since the start of training camp. That value took an even bigger leap on Wednesday when the Houston Texans cut veteran running back Marlon Mack.

Pierce is now the clear-cut No. 1 option in Houston's rushing attack and leaves fantasy managers with an enticing FLEX option heading into Week 1.

Dameon Pierce Fantasy Outlook

Pierce entered the fantasy season as RB43 on The Duel's fantasy football preseason rankings, just seven spots higher than his former teammate Mack. He's already risen his ADP RB35, according to Fantasy Pros' and is listed at RB37 in their official Week 1 rankings.

It looked as if the Texans would split duties between Pierce and Mack on early downs, leaving Rex Burkhead with passing-back responsibilities. Now, those early downs are all up to Pierce.

From a fantasy perspective, the Texans' running back room was a mess in 2021. Burkhead lead the team with 122 rushing attempts and three others eclipsed 50+ carries. Pierce has every opportunity to eclipse the 150-200 range in touches this season. While most of those will come on the ground because of Burkhead, Pierce averaged 7.8 yards per carry in the preseason.

That's an unsustainable figure, but even if Pierce averages 4.5 yards per carry, that's good for nearly 700 yards on the ground (at 150 attempts). Add in even five scores on the ground, and that's equivalent to the season AJ Dillon just put up (803 yards, 5 TDs), RB21 numbers in standard formats.

There's a lot to like about Pierce heading into the fantasy season and he's definitely worth picking up in the later rounds of your draft, or targeting on the waiver wire in the early weeks of this campaign.
