The college football community and the Clemson Tigers, alike, have temporarily lost arguably the most talented player in the country in starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence after he tested positive for COVID-19 last Wednesday.
With the ACC's mandatory 10-day waiting period following a positive COVID test, head coach Dabo Swinney officially announced that Lawrence would in fact be out of his team's biggest game of the year against the No. 4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road in Week 10.
While Lawrence has been off to a Heisman Trophy-worthy season, unfortunately, this 10-day hiatus ripple effect has now seeped its way into the betting odds of the entire 2020 Heisman race in delivering a tough blow to the former favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Trevor Lawrence Heisman Odds 2020
That's right, despite leading his No. 1 ranked team in the nation to a perfect 6-0 start with 1,833 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions to show for it, Lawrence has fallen behind not one, but two other candidates in the latest Heisman odds.
Lawrence was previously an odds-on favorite, but his latest +200 odds to win the nation's most prestigious award for individual achievement in college football has him playing catchup to Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields (+150) and Alabama Crimson Tide QB Mac Jones (+150).
Both players have gotten off to phenomenal starts to the year, however, Fields has just two appearances to his 2020 résumé due to the Big Ten season's delayed start upon returning from a complete cancellation of this season earlier this summer.
As for the Heisman race beyond these three star quarterbacks, there really isn't much of one at all. Florida Gators QB Kyle Trask and BYU Cougars QB Zach Wilson sit tied for the fourth-best odds behind Lawrence at just +3000.
In what has proven to have become all but a QB's award in recent years, the 2020 Heisman race appears to be boiling down to that yet again this fall.
