The New Orleans Saints began the season without leading wide receiver Michael Thomas. His injury rehab took a turn for the worse and the latest update has big fantasy implications for wideout Marquez Callaway.
Michael Thomas Injury Update
Thomas announced on Twitter that he'll be done for the remainder of the 2021 season resulting from a new issue with his ankle injury.
Marquez Callaway Fantasy Outlook
Second-year wideout Marquez Callaway is the biggest fantasy beneficiary from this news. He's operated as New Orleans' No. 1 WR throughout the season and will continue to do so.
Callaway averages nearly five targets per game and leads the receiving corps with 33 targets. He's turned those 33 targets into 19 receptions for 284 yards and 3 TDs. Those numbers are good for WR54 in PPR formats.
The injury news takes on a complex wrinkle considering Jameis Winston suffered a season-ending injury in Week 8. He'll be on the shelf for the season as Taysom Hill takes over at quarterback.
Hill battled Winston for the starting role throughout camp and ultimately the Saints coaching staff was impressed with Winston's throwing ability. It won't be surprising to see New Orleans channel more of a running attack with the combination of Mark Ingram's addition to the roster and Winston's loss.
The Saints rush the ball at the second-highest clip across the NFL (53.0%).
