Updated (Friday, Dec. 3, 3:40 p.m. EST): Broncos head coach Vic Fangio ruled Melvin Gordon as doubtful to play in Week 13. Javonte Williams is a solid RB2 option for fantasy managers on Sunday.
Melvin Gordon was left hurting following the Denver Broncos' Week 12 victory and now his status for the Sunday Night Football matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs is up in the air.
Melvin Gordon Injury Update
Broncos head coach Vic Fangio announced Thursday that Gordon would be missing his second day of practice in a row and has a 50% chance of playing against the Chiefs this weekend.
If Gordon is forced to miss time, Javonte Williams' fantasy outlook for the week could absolutely skyrocket.
Javonte Williams Fantasy Outlook
Williams has been a stud for fantasy managers in his rookie campaign, averaging 10.8 fantasy points per game which is good for RB28 in PPR formats. Impressively, he's accomplished that without playing more than 58% of offensive snaps in a game.
Gordon has averaged 18.3 opportunities (15.7 carries, 2.6 targets) over his last three games. Meanwhile, Williams has averaged 15.3 opportunities during that same span. Even if he only sees half of Gordon's, that's still more than enough to make him a dangerous fantasy weapon.
Sunday's game script could also benefit Williams. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Chiefs as 9.5-favorites, meaning Denver might be forced to throw the ball more. Fortunately, Kansas City has given up 71 receptions (8th) and 594 receiving yards (5th) to RBs in 2021.
Even if Gordon plays and isn't 100%, the Broncos could end up relying on Williams for the bulk of the backfield duties. Regardless of the scenario, start the rookie rusher with confidence.
