The New Orleans Saints officially ended the Sean Payton era this offseason by trading him to the Denver Broncos. Between New Orleans' lofty asking price and Denver's chaotic coaching search, it felt like a miracle the Saints were able to pull a deal off.

Well, it turns out team legend Drew Brees helped play a role in Payton's decision.

Payton told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday that Brees insisted he take the Broncos job. Brees had his own self-interest in mind, since he was being bombarded by Denver QB Russell Wilson in regards to Payton's decision.

This is a small, but hilarious tidbit from Payton's recruitment to Denver. Connections can go a long way in the NFL, which Wilson used to ultimately get the coach he wanted.

It all worked out in the end for everyone involved. Denver got the accomplished head coach it was looking for, while the Saints received a first- and second-round pick in return, thanks in part to a small assist from Brees.
