Safety Justin Simmons has been a defensive leader for the Denver Broncos ever since he was selected by the team in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. While his long-term status remains up in the air, he was just franchise tagged by the Broncos for the 2021 season.
Broncos general manager George Paton spoke about Simmons' future earlier this week.
Justin Simmons Broncos Contract
Denver's GM stated that Simmons is one of the team's core guys and the goal is to sign him to a long-term deal. While the front office failed to reach an agreement with Simmons last offseason and he played on the franchise tag in 2020, Paton is new to the job and seems invested in getting a contract signed.
Simmons has been one of the most reliable players on Denver's defense, racking up at least 93 tackles and 3 interceptions in each of the last three seasons. In fact, he has had almost no injury scares, starting all 48 games over that span and also making the Pro Bowl for the first time last season.
If Simmons were to ever enter the open market, he would draw interest from a number of NFL teams and be in for a big payday. That is why it is important for the Broncos to lock him into a deal now and secure that position for the future.
