New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley suffered a potentially scary ankle injury in Week 5, as he was carted off of the field against the Dallas Cowboys. Barkley was immediately ruled out for the rest of the game, which prompts serious concerns about his availability for next week and beyond.
Barkley possibly missing time could skyrocket Devontae Booker's fantasy outlook going forward.
Saquon Barkley Fantasy Outlook
Barkley being hit by the injury bug was managers' biggest concern after drafting him this year. There's no word on the severity of the ankle injury to this point, but the RB being ruled out quickly after is a serious cause for concern.
He has recorded 316 yards from scrimmage and 2 scores on 66 touches this season.
Devontae Booker Fantasy Outlook
If Barkley misses extended time, Devontae Booker is in line to serve as the Giants' lead back. The sixth-year pro has seen limited use this season behind Barkley -- who's averaging 17.8 opportunities (13 rushes plus 4.8 targets) per game -- but he's capable of stepping up if needed.
Booker turned 93 rushes into 423 yards and 3 TDs behind Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs last season. That included a 21.3-point peformance (PPR scoring) in Week 10 against the Denver Broncos, when he ran for 81 yards and two scores.
The veteran would likely get the first crack at the RB1 role over rookie sixth-round pick Gary Brightwell, who is the only other back currently on the active roster. Booker will be a hot waiver-wire target assuming Barkley does miss time.
