It was less than two weeks ago when it seemed like Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi wasn't making much progress in his injury rehab. He's trying to bounce back from an oblique strain that's kept him out of Kansas City's lineup since June 20. While things were looking grim not that long ago, the Royals received some good news regarding the latest Mondesi injury update.

Royals manager Mike Matheny said on Friday that Mondesi is beginning to progress his swing, according to The Athletic's Alec Lewis. While there's still no timetable on the 25-year-old shortstop's return, this news should give Kansas City fans a lot of reasons to be optimistic.

The Royals currently have a 36-53 record and sit 18.0 games back of the Chicago White Sox (54-35) for first place in the AL Central. With a record like that, the good news is that they won't need to rush Mondesi back to the lineup. However, when he does return, he should give Royals fans something to cheer about down the stretch.

Mondesi — who's been on the injured list three times in 2021 alone — has looked impressive in the 10 games that he has suited up for this season. It may be a small sample size, but the young shortstop has 5 doubles, 4 home runs and 9 RBIs in 36 at-bats while slashing .361/.378/.833. It's unlikely that he would've maintained that pace all year, however, look for him to finish the season strong after all of the time he's missed.

On the off chance that the Royals go on a late-season run, they have +39000 odds (5th) to win the AL Central and +50000 odds (tied for worst in the MLB) to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
