Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi has spent a lot of time on the injured list this season. In fact, he's been placed on the IL on three separate occasions in 2021 as he's dealt with strains to both his left and right obliques. However, Mondesi was set to resume baseball activities on Wednesday as he works towards his return.
While Mondesi did field some groundballs on Wednesday, MLB.com's Anne Rogers reported that he didn't make any throws. In other words, it's not looking like a lot of progress has been made during his rehab stint.
Adalberto Mondesi Injury Update
While it's never a good idea to rush an athlete through rehab, it's understandable if Kansas City fans are frustrated by the latest Mondesi news. After all, the Royals are currently 36-49 and the clock is ticking on a possible playoff push in the second half of the 2021 MLB season — regardless of how unlikely that seems in the first place. They're currently 12.0 games back of the final American League Wild Card position.
Mondesi was certainly one of the bring spots for the Royals this season even though he's only appeared in 10 games so far. Still, the 2020 American League stolen bases leader managed to tally 4 home runs and 9 RBI in 36 at-bats so far this season. That's not even to mention his impressive .361/.378/.833 slash line. Yes, it's a small sample size, but it's not hard to see how Mondesi's eventual return should bring somewhat of a boost to the Royals lineup.
Kansas City is currently tied for the 23rd-best World Series odds at +30000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Even if highly unlikely that Mondesi will singlehandedly turn the club into contenders, his return will at least make things more palatable for Royals fans in the second half of the season.
