Starting pitcher Max Scherzer gave the Washington Nationals a scare last week. The veteran righty exited Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants with a groin injury after throwing just 12 pitches. While the organization and its fans hoped that it wouldn't be anything series, the Nationals received some bad news regarding his latest injury update.

The Nationals placed Scherzer on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, meaning the veteran pitcher is expected to miss some time. He tried to bounce back early with a bullpen session on Monday, but he couldn't make it through the entire duration, according to NBC Sports EDGE.

Max Scherzer Injury Update

Before finding himself on the injured list, Scherzer had been one of the bright spots in Washington's disappointing campaign. With a 5-4 record through 13 starts, the three-time Cy Young Award winner has recorded a 2.21 ERA (a career-best) while striking out 104 batters in 77.1 innings.

Meanwhile, the Nationals currently have a 28-35 record and trail the first-place New York Mets by 7.5 games in the NL East. Considering how the Nationals have a four-game series against the Mets beginning on Friday, Scherzer couldn't have been hurt at a worse time.

The Nationals have the 2nd-worst odds to win the NL East at +2800, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Their odds to win the World Series also have them as longshots, sitting at +7000 (T-19th). One bright spot is that, if he can heal quickly, Scherzer could find himself having an outside chance of winning the NL Cy Young Award again. FanDuel Sportsbook has him at +2500 odds (7th) to end the season as the National League's top pitcher for the third time since 2016.
