The Seattle Mariners officially begin their Spring Training schedule against the San Diego Padres on Friday, but unfortunately for them one of their expected starters is no longer available.

Mariners beat writer Corey Brock reported on Friday that Tommy La Stella has been scratched from the lineup with right arm soreness.

Mariners Spring Training News

La Stella, who was initially slated to DH, appears to be dealing with a somewhat significant injury and is expected to miss close to a week, according to Brock.

That means Seattle fans will have to wait a bit longer to get their first glimpse of La Stella in a Mariners uniform. The 34-year-old former All-Star and World Series champ signed as a free agent with Seattle back in January and is expected to fill a utility-type role given his ability to play multiple positions.

This is a disappointing setback for the veteran, who is looking to bounce back from a career-worst .632 OPS with the San Francisco Giants last year. Thankfully the Mariners still have a full month of Spring Training games remaining, so La Stella has plenty of time to see some action and get ready for Opening Day on March 30.
