Trey Lyles has flashed some big-time potential, but he has yet to put it all together. The 6-foot-10 big man has shown he can be a solid shooter, as he converted 38.1 percent of his 3-point attempts in 2017-18, while attempting 3.0 per game.
Even so, Lyles wasn't a huge piece in the Denver Nuggets rotation last season. With the recent acquisition of Jerami Grant, and the expected return of Michael Porter Jr., the Nuggets rescinded their qualifying offer to Lyles, making him an unrestricted free agent. With that in mind, here are the three likeliest destinations for Lyles in free agency.
3. Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks could use another big man with some shooting ability after losing Dewayne Dedmon to the Sacramento Kings. Lyles won't be able to cover for what Dedmon did on defense, but he's a stretch four and can fit well in Atlanta's perimeter-centric offense.
2. Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers have been looking for a big man with 3-point shooting ability for quite some time. Lyles could be a great gamble here, as he's likely to come cheaply, and could earn some minutes alongside Zach Collins. Once Jusuf Nurkic returns from injury, signing Lyles could give the Trail Blazers a solid frontcourt with some serious upside.
1. Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks struck out on most of the big-name players in free agency, but signing Lyles could be a high-upside gamble. His shooting ability could pair nicely with Kristaps Porzingis, and he's athletic enough to make some plays in transition. Even though Lyles is a bit of a sieve defensively, Porzingis' ability as a rim protector could cover for some of those mistakes.
