For the first two months of the MLB season, everything seemed to be going to plan for the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis trailed by just 0.5 games in the NL Central when the calendar turned to June and their young starting pitcher Jack Flaherty was dealing.
At the time, Flaherty pitched to a stifling 2.90 mark. Unfortunately, that good mojo didn't last long as Flaherty went down with a Grade 2 oblique strain and has been held out since. Now, St. Louis trails by more than 10.0 games in the division race and the season is slipping away.
But, for the first time in nearly 2.5 months, the Cardinals' 25-year-old righty will make his first start against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
Jack Flaherty Injury Update
There's no question, this return couldn't have come at a better time. Fellow starter Carlos Martinez looks to be shut down for the year and Kwang Hyun Kim just landed on the 10-day injured list himself.
It's certainly an uphill battle for St. Louis, but the return of Flahery could certainly boost their postseason odds. In 2018, Flaherty pitched to a 2.75 ERA and NL-leading 0.968 WHIP.
Currently, the Cardinals own +6500 odds to win the NL Central on FanDuel Sportsbook. Time will tell if Flaherty's return can help produce a major shakeup in those odds.
