The San Francisco 49ers have been decimated by injuries already. Stars are dropping like flies, with Nick Bosa, Jimmy Garoppolo and Deebo Samuel all out for extended periods of time. The backfield also took a significant hit on Sunday, with Raheem Mostert and his backup Tevin Coleman also set to miss the next few weeks.
That leaves Jerick McKinnon as San Francisco's lead back entering a juicy Week 3 matchup with the New York Giants.
Jerick McKinnon Fantasy Outlook
McKinnon has been excellent in a limited workload this season, recording 121 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns on just 9 touches. That's a stellar mark of 13.4 yards per touch. Likely set to see a dramatic uptick in volume, McKinnon could quickly become extremely valuable.
The Giants were the league's fifth-worst defense in 2019, per Football Outsiders' DVOA metrics. If McKinnon sees heavy volume against that unit, which has already allowed the ninth-most rushing yards per game this season, he could be in for a monster day.
There's no concrete update on Coleman and Mostert, but both are expected to miss multiple weeks. With Jeff Wilson being his only competition for touches, McKinnon is going to be a really valuable asset as long as those two are sidelined. Think of him as a low-end RB2 or FLEX option while those two are out.
He's the RB20 in our Week 3 PPR rankings.
