One of the biggest headlines of the MLB trade deadline was the fire sale put on by the Chicago Cubs. Veteran outfielder Jason Heyward remains one of only a few players left from the storied 2016 World Series team. However, he was recently placed on the 10-day injured list due to a finger injury.

Jason Heyward Injury Update

Heyward was diagnosed with left index finger inflammation and no timetable has been set up for his return yet. The 31-year-old's future remains up in the air as he seems to be stuck on a suddenly rebuilding team. Simply put, it would be surprising to see him play a major role next season.

The outfielder was seeing a lot of playing time after the MLB trade deadline, but continued to struggle at the plate. Overall Heyward is slashing .198/.271/.322 to go along with 28 runs scored, 6 home runs and 22 RBI. He has also stolen 5 bases through 83 games played.

The Cubs called up outfield prospect Greg Diechmann in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old was recently acquired in a trade with the Oakland Athletics and is highly touted for his eye at the plate. Diechmann has posted an impressive 18.9 percent walk rate through 285 minor league plate appearances this season.

All things considered, the Cubs seem to be gearing up for the years to come rather than fighting for a playoff spot in 2021. They are currently tied for the worst odds to win the National League pennant at +50000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
