Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has a lot of defenders. Even when his performance wasn't up to snuff, fans and media analysts were quick to argue that he isn't the problem. The blame often fell on the offensive line, the pass-catchers or the coaching staff.
But with Philadelphia's franchise QB in the midst of a disastrous season, even Wentz's loudest supporters have quieted down. And apparently, that includes Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, who Adam Schefter believes is considering benching Wentz.
It's hard to argue with Schefter there. Pederson didn't exactly go to bat for Wentz in this clip – to say the absolute least.
Frankly, Wentz is playing like a quarterback who should be benched. He leads the NFL in both interceptions (14) and fumbles (10). He's basically been 2019 Jameis Winston, without all of raw statistical production the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer brought to the table that year.
It's hard to imagine many other quarterbacks getting the benefit of the doubt like Wentz has this year – especially when the team spent a second-round pick on his potential replacement.
But Pederson's comments seem to signal that his preferential treatment could be coming to an end soon. If Philadelphia wants to make a real run at the NFC East, that may need to come sooner rather than later.
