DeMarcus Cousins and the Houston Rockets have officially parted ways in what seems to be an amicable way. However, the 30-year-old center is now a free agent and in need of a new team.

While it is believed that Cousins will sign with one of the league's contenders, there is a chance he doesn't go that route, and there could be a few potential suitors that aren't sure-fire contenders.

Let's take a look at three dark horse teams that could sign Cousins.

3. New York Knicks

The Knicks just lost starting center Mitchell Robinson for 4-6 weeks. Now with only Nerlens Noel and Taj Gibson as the two centers on the roster, bringing in a guy like Boogie could be the perfect band-aid they need. Cousins went to Kentucky and it seems the Knicks are building their own version of the school in the NBA. Already with four Kentucky alumni on the roster along with Kenny Payne, a beloved former John Calipari assistant, Cousins could feel right at home with a team competing for a playoff spot. He is already using this year to try and prove himself, and being a solid contributor helping bring a team to the playoffs in the biggest market in the country could do wonders.

2. Golden State Warriors

The Warriors aren't exactly considered contenders, but they certainly have the talent to make a run in the playoffs. Cousins could return to Golden State for another stint with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. With only rookie James Wiseman and Kevon Looney on the roster at center, Cousins could provide depth and talent at the position for a team that needs it. He has already proved he can play within that system and could be a perfect guy to slide in with minimal issue. And he could end up being a big help for Wiseman's development as well.

1. Phoenix Suns

Chris Paul has turned the Phoenix Suns into the real deal this season. Currently sitting fourth in the Western Conference standings with a record of 20-10, Phoenix is the closest thing to a contender on this list. Cousins could come in and help anchor that second unit while Deandre Ayton is on the bench, providing both scoring and veteran leadership. Similar to Wiseman, Cousins would also be a help to Ayton. Despite all his recent struggles with injuries, Boogie remains one of the most skilled big men in the league.
