There aren't many players who are hotter than the Minnesota Twins' outfielder Byron Buxton. The guy has been tearing the cover off of the ball this season, helping to lead the MLB's fourth-best offense in terms of runs per game (6.11).

But you'd never really know that by looking at his current odds to win the 2021 AL MVP award, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

Byron Buxton 2021 AL MVP Odds

Buxton is currently available at +4000 to win the award, tying him for the 16th-best odds in the AL. Those odds simply do not reflect the start he's had.

Through eight games, Buxton is slashing .481/.548/1.185 with 5 home runs, 4 doubles, 9 RBI and a stolen base. He's currently leading the AL in Baseball Reference's Wins Above Replacement (WAR) metric and in slugging percentage, while he's tied for the lead in home runs. He's also leading the AL in wOBA (.699).

Obviously, Buxton is not going to maintain this pace. That'd pretty much be impossible.

But the underlying numbers don't make it look like he's going to fall off a cliff anytime soon, either. His StatCast hard-hit rate is 72.7%, he's got a barrel percentage of 31.8% and an exit velocity of 98.2 MPH. All three rank within the top 1.0% of the league.

That's all just a fancy way of saying that he's absolutely mashing right now.

While his numbers will surely come back to earth a bit in due time, Buxton's MVP candidacy appears to be for real. It's time for the MVP odds to start reflecting that.
