The Boston Red Sox have turned the page on a slow start, going 22-9 in their last 31 games and now just trailing by 0.5 games in the AL Wild Card race.

The club also received some exciting news about a top prospect on Monday, ahead of the league's 13-pitcher roster limit deadline. Originally passed ahead of the 2022 season, the 13-pitcher rule stipulates that MLB rosters will only be allowed to carry 13 pitchers after increasing the active roster from 25 to 26 players. The allowance of 14 pitchers has been twice extended this season.

With this roster spot opening up, the Red Sox decided to officially promote top prospect Jeter Downs for his MLB debut.

The middle infielder is ranked No. 5 in Boston's farm system, according to MLB.com prospect rankings.

Downs began the year at Triple-A and has been doing practically everything except hitting for average. The 23-year-old is hitting just .180 at the plate in 53 games, but leads the team with 11 stolen bases and ranks second with 11 home runs and 35 runs scored.

There is some expectation this may be a short stay considering Kike Hernandez and Christian Arroyo both remain on the IL.

Downs is just one of three key pieces the Red Sox received from the Los Angeles Dodgers for Mookie Betts back 2020. Alex Verdugo, of course, hit .294/.355/.440 in his first two seasons with Boston while Connor Wong ranked No. 27 in Boston's minor leagues a year ago.

The Red Sox designated James Norwood for assignment in a corresponding move to remove the 14th pitcher from their active roster.
