NFL Insider Weighs In on Steelers-Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Rumors

Much like in the past, this year's NFL offseason is packed with rumors. One of the more prevalent ones that keeps coming up is a potential trade involving the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Steelers are in desperate need of a new starting QB following Ben Roethlisberger's retirement. Meanwhile, Garoppolo has made it clear that he's open to a trade since Trey Lance seems poised to be the 49ers' starter going forward.
Sometimes rumors are just that — rumors. However, in this case, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport is under the belief that where there's smoke, there's fire.

Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Steelers
Rapoport appeared on the NFL Network on Thursday to discuss the Steelers' QB search. He said that the organization will look everywhere for Roethlisberger's replacement, with Garoppolo being "a name to keep an eye on."
Rapoport theorizes that the Steelers could use the No. 20 pick at the 2022 NFL Draft on a quarterback, but a veteran like Garoppolo could also work as a stop-gap.
Garoppolo was as reliable as they come in 15 starts with the 49ers in 2021, racking up 3,810 passing yards and 20 touchdowns to 12 interceptions on a 68.3% completion rating. Even though his play came into question the playoffs, he still led San Francisco to its second NFC Championship Game in three seasons.
Garoppolo is set to have a $26.9 million cap hit in 2022. While that's a lot of money, the Steelers have $29.5 million in cap space, according to Spotrac, so a deal could be made with cash to spare.
Whether they go with Garoppolo or not, the Steelers need a legitimate starting QB to be competitive next season. As it stands, FanDuel Sportsbook is giving Pittsburgh +5000 odds (T-No. 24) to win Super Bowl LVII.
