The New York Mets are looking to build momentum as the second half of the MLB season gets underway. They remain the leaders of the NL East division with a 47-42, but got some devastating news on starting pitcher Jacob deGrom. He is heading back on the injured list due to right forearm tightness.
Jacob deGrom Injury Update
Manager Luis Rojas said that deGrom felt discomfort after pitching a bullpen session in Pittsburgh this past weekend. He underwent an MRI hours later that determined there was no structural damage. That is the good news, but losing deGrom for any amount of time is a big hit to the Mets' rotation.
It's safe to say the Mets will not take any chances here and only have the 33-year-old ace pitch when he is fully healthy. deGrom stated his frustration to reporters and said that this is the first injury he has had all year due to pitching. Everything else he has dealt with has been caused by hitting at the plate.
The two-time Cy Young winner has been nothing short of dominant in 2021. He leads all of baseball with an ERA of 1.08 and a WHIP of 0.554. Overall, deGrom is 7-2 on the season to go along with 146 strikeouts in a total of 92.0 innings pitched (15 starts).
This is a situation worth watching in the coming weeks as deGrom's availability makes a direct impact on the team's chances of making the playoffs. For now, the Mets have odds set at +900 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
