There wasn't a rookie wide receiver that stood out more during training camp than Pittsburgh's George Pickens. That success hasn't translated to the regular season, though, and it has left Steelers fans wondering why. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada avoided the topic entirely on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh Steelers News

Pickens made a notable comment saying that he was "running free 90% of the time" in a 17-14 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 2. When Canada was asked whether or not the statement had any validity to it, he simply responded by "I respect your question, but I'm going to let that one lay."

Canada answered with a chuckle and gave Steelers fans another reason to worry about his offensive game plan. Through two weeks, Pittsburgh is only averaging 255.0 yards and 18.5 points per game. Both of those marks rank in the bottom half of the NFL and give little reason to be optimistic.

Keep in mind this development comes just a few days after starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky said he wants to get Pickens "more involved" on offense. The former Georgia standout has hauled in 2 of his 6 targets for 26 yards through two games despite playing in 78% of the offensive snaps.

Seeing rookies take some time to adjust to the NFL and get going is nothing new. However, seeing an OC avoid talking about said rookie is something out of the ordinary. It's worth keeping an eye on how Pickens is utilized when the Steelers face the Cleveland Browns on Week 3 Thursday Night Football.
