The Seattle Mariners are 12-15 to start the 2022 MLB season, sitting 6.5 games back of the Los Angeles Angels for first place in the American League West. The Mariners could use help cutting that deficit down, resulting in them calling in reinforcements in the form of a top pitching prospect.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Saturday afternoon that the Mariners are promoting right-handed pitcher George Kirby. The club had previously optioned fellow RHP Matt Brash to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, opening up a roster spot.

The 20th overall pick at the 2019 MLB Draft, it's unknown when Kirby will make his first start. Still, the hope is that his presence will help a Seattle starting rotation that's tied for giving up the sixth-most earned runs (60) this season.

Kirby has looked strong in his five starts with Double-A Arkansas in 2022. He's 2-0 in those appearances, pitching to a 1.82 ERA and 0.892 WHIP while averaging 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

Baseball America listed Kirby as the No. 3 pitching prospect ahead of the 2022 season. Needless to say, expectations are extremely high for him and fans shouldn't panic if he has a rocky start to his MLB career.

If Kirby can adjust to the Majors sooner than later, the Mariners will be a better team because of it. It's the type of push they could use to get back into the AL West race, where they sit at +410 odds (No. 3) to win their division, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
