Minnesota Vikings fans were hoping that 2021 third-round pick Kellen Mond could be the eventual successor to quarterback Kirk Cousins. After former head coach Mike Zimmer never seemed to see it that way, new leader Kevin O'Connell has provided a much more promising early review of Mond.

O'Connell wasn't shy to praise Mond for his efforts this spring and explained to reporters that the 22-year-old is instinctively making checks at the line of scrimmage. Mond has a realistic shot to earn the backup job over veteran Sean Mannion if he can impress the coaching staff in training camp.

The former Texas A&M standout finds himself in a much better situation than he was in a year ago. Zimmer's job was on the line for most of the 2021 season, which meant developing a future starter wasn't really on his mind. He was more worried about winning football games with the current roster.

Fast forward and O'Connell's mindset is almost the complete opposite. While he is still focused on winning games, the former LA Rams offensive coordinator also has a long enough leash to develop players down the road. After all, Minnesota could cut ties with Cousins sooner rather than later.

Mond has yet to see any NFL regular season action, but he did appear in all three of the Vikings preseason matchups last fall. He completed 28 of his 51 pass attempts for 310 yards and 0 touchdowns (1 interception). Mond's upside remains in his underrated ability to throw the deep ball.

For now, the Vikings have their eyes set on winning their first NFC North title since 2017 and FanDuel Sportsbook gives them +280 odds to accomplish that goal.
