Another rookie running back will join Elijah Mitchell out on the field Sunday as Trey Sermon was activated by the San Francisco 49ers. However, fantasy managers should feel confident that Mitchell is the player to roster in this backfield.

His Week 2 outlook remains strong in a matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Elijah Mitchell Fantasy Outlook

Mitchell took over after Raheem Mostert suffered an injury during the season opener. The 2021 sixth-round pick made the most of his opportunity by rushing for 104 yards and 1 touchdown on 19 carries. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has no reason to decrease Mitchell's role moving forward.

NFL Network's Ian Rappoport reiterated that Mitchell is going to "carry the load" in Week 2, while Sermon should see some snaps in his NFL debut. That is good news from a fantasy football perspective given Mitchell is likely to see double-digit touches in a game that is expected to come down to the wire.

Mitchell draws an intriguing matchup in Week 2. The Eagles gave up 124 rushing yards to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 as well as 4.8 yards per carry. Both of those marks ranked in the bottom half of the NFL. Overall, the Eagles allowed 13 rushing touchdowns during the 2020 season (T-No. T-No. 22 in NFL).

The 49ers have proven over the last few seasons that they will give their starting running back a major workload, no matter who it is. Fantasy managers shouldn't overthink in this situation. Mitchell is a great FLEX option this week and a player that should post RB2 numbers.

The top waiver wire add of the week checks in at RB23 in The Duel's Week 2 fantasy football rankings.
