The Cleveland Browns suffered an epic collapse in Week 2 against the New York Jets, giving up 2 touchdowns and failing to recover an onside kick in the final 82 seconds to finish with a demoralizing 31-30 defeat.

Cleveland's secondary took a lot of the blame after giving up 4 passing touchdowns and 307 passing yards to backup QB Joe Flacco, including a 66-yard touchdown to Corey Davis where he was wide open far past the Browns' secondary.

Denzel Ward is one of the game's best cornerbacks, and theoretically one of the team's leaders, especially on defense. However, after the game on Sunday, Ward did not take on that leadership role. Instead, he sought to absolve himself of any blame for the upsetting loss.

Denzel Ward Comments

Ward took to Twitter to defend his performance as well.

Ward might be right, as we don't know the exact responsibilities and assignments on every play for the Browns, but fans are still upset at his lack of leadership in the situation. The entire defense collapsed, and it wasn't just one play that lead to this loss. Ward needs to recognize that, even if he wasn't directly responsible for any missed coverage.

As one of the team's defensive leaders, Ward simply can't have these types of public reactions, especially after a devastating loss. If he wants to argue specifics and technicalities, take that up with the coaching staff and the rest of the team during film sessions or practice this week.

Doing it publicly in the media accomplishes nothing more than creating problems for everyone and sound bites for the media to play back all week.

Steelers vs Browns Week 3 Odds

Ward and his teammates will have to recover quickly if they're going to bounce back against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football this week. Despite their recent meltdown, the Browns are still 4.5-point home favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
