Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has never been afraid to speak his mind. He wants the best out of his players every day and the backup quarterbacks are not getting the job done. An ultimatum was even issued to Tim Boyle and David Blough prior to the team's preseason finale on Sunday.

Detroit Lions Preseason

Campbell made it clear in a simple, yet decisive statement. He said that "somebody needs to step up" and lock down the backup gig behind Jared Goff. If that doesn't happen this weekend, using the No. 2 waiver claim position on a QB could become a reality for the Lions if the right guy becomes available.

Boyle will get the start against the Pittsburgh Steelers after serving as Goff's backup in 2021. The 27-year-old is a combined 21-of-31 for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns (1 interception) this preseason. Boyle's drives seem to start off well, but eventually stall before the Lions get into scoring position.

Meanwhile, Blough is a combined 34-of-50 for 217 yards and 1 touchdown (1 interception). Campbell has praised his ability to keep the chains moving. The only problem is that Blough has made huge mistakes late in games. His fumble against the Atlanta Falcons opened the door for a comeback.

The number of intense position battles in Detroit makes it unlikely that the team will opt to keep both Boyle & Blough on the roster past Tuesday's 53-man deadline. It'll be interesting to see if either one balls out and saves their job in a game scheduled for kickoff at 4:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Lions are slated as a 4.5-point road underdog against the Steelers with odds set at +175 on the moneyline, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
