The St. Louis Cardinals secured their third straight postseason appearance in 2021, but that didn't stop the team from making major changes this offseason, including the firing of manager Mike Shildt.
St. Louis has also been aggressive in free agency, and on Tuesday they landed a heavily-sought-after free-agent starting pitcher.
MLB insider Jeff Passan reported that left-handed pitcher Steven Matz agreed to a four-year, $44 million contract on Tuesday.

Matz chose the Cardinals over at least four others finalists, including the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.
The talented lefty enjoyed this ripe free agent market after a career season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, where he pitched to a 3.82 ERA across 29 starts.
St. Louis finished the season with the 12th-best ERA in baseball (3.98), but clearly believe a strong starting rotation can send them over the top after winning 90 games.
Currently, the Cardinals hold +1800 odds to win the 2022 World Series (T-11th) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
