C.J. Gardner-Johnson's Agents Take Shot at Eagles Over Contract Offer

Philadelphia Eagles fans were stunned Sunday night when it was revealed safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson would signing a one-year, $8 million contract with the Detroit Lions. The talanted defender leaving for a lower-than-expected deal prompted a ton of questions about what happened between Philadelphia and the 25-year-old.
Well, it sounds like Gardner-Johnson's representation isn't happy with how the Eagles negotiated in free agency.

1. One year deal = $8m
2. 3 yr deal = $24m max with 17m+ in yr 3

The Twitter account for Universal Sports Management, Gardner-Johnson's agency, quickly responded to the buzz around its client late Sunday. They laid out two scenarios, one being a one-year deal for $8 million, or a backloaded three-year deal for $24 million max.
The agency labeled the one-year contract as "real," while calling the three-year version "fake," which makes it clear how they feel about these options.
This seems to pull back the curtain on negotiations between Philly and Gardner-Johnson's team. The safety's reps obviously weren't happy with most of the money being tied to a non-guaranteed third year, causing them to seek out other options.
Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer added his own insights on the situation as well. He outlined a timeline where Gardner-Johnson's passed on a multi-year deal, which eventually led to this breakup.
Skinny on why C.J. Gardner-Johnson is no longer in Philly:
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) March 20, 2023
- #Eagles made multi-year offer early in FA.
- He was looking for more.
- They moved on, signed Bradberry, extended Slay.
- He/agent overvalued not realizing market/league viewed him as risk.
- Settled for prove-it deal.
With conflicting viewpoints on who caused Gardner-Johnson's departure, it's clear his exit won't be a smooth one. There's sure to be more details that arise in the coming days on this already-messy divorce.
