Boston Bruins vs. New York Islanders News, Analysis, and Picks

The Islanders have to be happy to escape Boston with a series tie and now be able to play in front of even more fans on home ice on Thursday.

New York almost blew a 3-1 lead on Monday night as the Bruins stormed back with third-period goals by Boston's big guns. The Bruins' top-line forwards teamed up for Patrice Bergeron's goal to pull within one halfway through the final frame. Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak notched assists on the 3-2 marker. Just under five minutes later, Marchand tied it on the powerplay with his fourth of the postseason. Casey Cizikas allowed hungry Islanders fans a giant sigh of relief as he untied it for good 15 minutes into overtime with his first of this postseason. 

Semyon Varlamov stepped in with 39 saves in his first game in almost two weeks. Varlamov gave way to rookie Ilya Sorokin for four games leading into Game 2. Head Coach Barry Trotz made the change after Sorokin allowed four goals on 39 shots in Game 1's 5-2 loss to the Bruins. So instead of coming back to Nassau down 0-2, Islanders fans can feel a little more breathing room and hope New York can extend their final run at the Coliseum before moving to a new arena next year. The capacity will be increased to 12,000 for Game 3.

New York won their final two home games to knock off the Penguins in round one, and as COVID-19 restrictions ease, the building should be the loudest it's been in a few years.  Boston will try for their first win in New York this year after dropping all four regular-season meetings on the Isle. They may have to do it with a banged-up starting goaltender. 

Tuukka Rask did make 35 stops Monday but winced after allowing a goal in the second period. Rask had an injury-plagued 2021 and started just 24 games this season. It looks like the 34-year-old will play through his nagging ailments, but he may very well be less than 100%. 

The favorite is 4-1 in their past five meetings, while the home team has won eight of ten. In their past six head-to-heads, the over is 3-1-2. Overall, Boston is 5-1 as a favorite, while the Isle has won four of five. The over is 5-1 New York's past six as a home dog, and Boston is 5-2-1 to the under in their past eight on the road.
