Bo Scarbrough Fantasy Outlook Climbing as Lions Lead Back for Week 12 Matchup With Redskins

Just a few weeks after Ty Johnson fell completely flat as a waiver wire pickup, another new lead back has emerged in the Detroit Lions' backfield.

Bo Scarbrough was signed from the practice squad in Week 11 even though Johnson was back from his concussion, and he quickly took the reins as the leader of the backfield.

The Detroit backfield has mostly been a mess in 2019. Kerryon Johnson emerged as a workhorse once they cut C.J. Anderson, but he landed on IR following Week 7. Ty has failed to get anything going as a lead back, not eclipsing even 30 yards in a game. Tra Carson was getting some work but also got hurt and released. Even Paul Perkins got some run before being released in favor of Scarbrough.

The struggles of that carousel make Scarbrough's fantasy outlook especially interesting. His 55 yards were the second-highest, single-game mark for any Lions back in 2019, only being beat by Kerryon's 125 in Week 4. He added a touchdown, also giving him the fifth-highest, single-game standard fantasy score (11.5 points) in the backfield for 2019.

Notching 14 carries while receiving no targets and playing just 49 percent of the offensive snaps is a concern for his long-term value, especially when the Lions have some very tough matchups on their schedule coming up. For Week 12, though, there's not much to be worried about.

The Washington Redskins have been below-average against the run by Football Outsiders' defensive DVOA metrics, and have given up the eighth-most fantasy points per game to opposing RBs.

Scarbrough's fantasy appeal depends heavily on what your team needs. If you're hurting for an RB option in Week 12 while fighting for a playoff spot (or a bye week), he should be a high-priority add. He sits at RB26 in our Week 12 PPR fantasy football rankings.

After Washington, he closes the fantasy season with matchups against the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. All four of those teams are top-12 run defenses, per Football Outsiders DVOA rankings, and with no value as a receiver, you're not going to want to start Scarbrough in the fantasy playoffs unless you're really desperate at RB.
