The Chicago Bears special teams unit could be missing an important piece when the team faces the New York Giants on Sunday. ESPN's Courtney Cronin reports that kicker Cairo Santos is questionable for Week 4 after missing practice this week due to personal reasons.
Even though Santos could end up playing, it's better to be safe than sorry. That's why the Bears immediately went out to add veteran kicker Michael Badgley to the practice squad before elevating him to the 53-man roster on Saturday.
Bears Roster News
A former Tulane product, Santos has become a Chicago fan favorite over the last three seasons with the Bears. He's played 38 career games in a Bears uniform, going 61-of-68 (89.7%) on field goals and 69-of-73 (94.5%) on extra-point attempts 62 yards on 171 kickoffs.
For now, Badgley replaces Santos until the latter clears up his personal matters. The 27-year-old veteran has kicked for three teams over four seasons, splitting the 2021 campaign between the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts.
The good news is that Badgley still looked like a viable option the last time he was on the field. Playing 12 games last year, he connected on 18-of-22 FGs and only missed one of his 41 extra-point tries. He's only performed 19 kickoffs in his career, though, making it interesting to see if he handles the role this week.
Badgely needs to bring his A-game if he wants to help the Bears win on the road. This year's Giants are no slouch and should give Chicago a run for its money.
Bears vs Giants Odds
Regardless of who is kicking, Chicago has an uphill battle this weekend. The Bears are the current 3-point underdogs to the Giants, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, in a game with a projected total set at 39.5 points.
