Austin Hooper has been the top tight end in fantasy football through 10 weeks. However, it appears the best at the position will be out of action for a while due to a knee injury sustained in the Atlanta Falcons' Week 10 win over the New Orleans Saints.
This is a big blow for an offense that had already traded away wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, placed second-string running back Ito Smith on IR, and may also be missing No. 1 RB Devonta Freeman after he also made an early exit in Week 10.
Hooper has been one of the very few consistently solid producers for Atlanta this season, catching 56 passes for 608 yards and six touchdowns. He is tied for the most receptions and touchdowns among tight ends on the year.
Hooper's backups, Luke Stocker and Jaeden Graham, are both totally unproven, and neither is likely to offer much fantasy value even with Hooper on the shelf.
Hooper has accounted for 18.5 percent of the Falcons' targets this season and his absence, should open up some volume for Calvin Ridley and Russell Gage, though the downgrade the entire offense gets with at least one of their top weapons cancels that out some from a fantasy value perspective.
It remains to be seen how long Hooper will be on the shelf, but if you've been counting on him as a consistent TE play this season then you'll have to look for a starting option on the waiver wire in Week 11.
