ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that it will be challenging for Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon to play in the Week 15 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. If he can't make it out there tonight, rookie Justin Jackson will be in line for the workload of a lifetime.
Chargers initially were told the knee injury that Melvin Gordon suffered Nov. 25 was a 2-4 week injury. It’s now 18 days, and while the Chargers won’t make a final determination on Gordon until pregame warmups, it will be challenging for him to play tonight.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) December 13, 2018
The idea that Gordon would play this week was always in question. After missing the last two games, he got in a limited practice on Tuesday and then traveled with the team to KC. However, the Chargers promoted RB Troymaine Pope, further signaling Gordon will likely not play today.
Melvin Gordon has been pushing to play and there is no decision yet. Troymaine Pope’s ascension is insurance if their star can’t go tonight. https://t.co/eVHQ7msMJB— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 13, 2018
The Chargers listed him as a game-time decision and subsequently promoted Pope from their practice squad.
Jackson has filled in admirably since being thrust into a bigger load over the last weeks, with 22 carries for 132 rushing yards and a touchdown, while adding three catches for 42 receiving yards. With Austin Ekeler already ruled out and Gordon's status trending downward, Jackson will likely reach numbers similar to the total he has accumulated this season.
Gordon owners definitely want to stay close to their computers or mobile devices tonight. If you don't have Gordon handcuffed with Jackson already, check out our list of streaming running backs later today.
