3 Players Who Won't Be on the Giants Roster Next Season

With Gabe Kapler at the helm for his inaugural season as San Francisco Giants skipper, the Bay Area baseball team exceeded expectations, but still fell just short of the playoffs after the 60-game sprint. Being that they had dished out a few one year "prove it" contracts last offseason, they'll now have to decide which players are worth re-signing for a full 162 game schedule.
Here are the three players that are the least likely to end up back with the Giants in 2021.
3. Drew Smyly, SP
Drew Smyly was one of those aforementioned "prove it" guys. The 31-year old pitched well during a brief revitalization with San Francisco (3.42 ERA), but he has rarely been consistent over a longer season throughout his career. The Giants may bring the starter back as a flier if Smyly doesn't get any better offers, but they probably make more of an effort to resign Kevin Gausman out of the two free agent starters.
2. Trevor Cahill, RP/SP
The veteran Trevor Cahill first entered the MLB as a soft-tossing starter, but as his career has gone on he has turned into more of a strikeout reliever. In 2020, he registered the second best strikeout-per-nine average of his career, at 11.2. He can still start on occasion too, which makes him a versatile pitcher to have on your roster. Someone will likely wisp away Cahill, who has already pitched for eight different teams in 12 seasons.
1. Tony Watson, RP
Despite his age (35), Tony Watson is still pitching at a high level as a late-game reliever. Ultra-consistent throughout his tenure in the league, Watson has pitched to a 2.80 ERA over 11 seasons with three different ball clubs. As a valued free agent for possibly his last time, Watson should take the best offer he gets on the open market, and it's unlikely to be made by the Giants.
