Saints vs. Titans Week 1: Storylines to Follow

  • Saints
    • Derek Carr's Saints debut
      • The Saints will enter the season with stability at quarterback for the first time since Drew Brees retired in 2021. After two years of uncertainty and below-average play under center, the Saints acted quickly this offseason to sign Carr to a four-year deal worth up to $150 million. There are questions about Carr's upside -- he has thrown for more than 30 touchdowns just once in his nine-year career -- but his primary attribute is one that is incredibly valuable to New Orleans: availability. Carr has missed just three games due to injury since he entered the league in 2014. In an NFC South where several teams have inexperienced signal-callers, Carr has the Saints favored to win the division (+135), according to the NFL division betting odds at FanDuel Sportsbook. All eyes will be on Carr in Week 1 as he starts a new era in New Orleans.
    • Can Chris Olave take the next step?
      • Chris Olave had an excellent rookie season despite the quarterback issues that plagued the Saints' offense. He caught 72 of 119 targets for 1,042 yards and 4 touchdowns, ranking second among rookie wide receivers in targets and yards despite playing only 15 games. Outside of Olave, there are large question marks for the Saints' offense. Michael Thomas hasn't played a full season since 2019, and Alvin Kamara could face trial on July 31st for an arrest for suspicion of felony battery in February of 2022. Olave taking the next step and becoming one of the best wide receivers in the league would be a huge boost for New Orleans. Week 1 will provide the first look at the Olave-Carr connection.
  • Titans
    • Who will start at quarterback?
      • The Titans selected quarterback Will Levis with the 33rd overall pick in this year's NFL Draft. He joins a quarterback room that has been led by Ryan Tannehill since 2019. After an excellent 2020 season in which he threw for 3,819 yards and 33 touchdowns, Tannehill's production has declined every season since. Last year, he completed 212 of 325 (65.2%) pass attempts for 2,536 yards (7.8 yards per attempt), 13 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions in 12 games played, battling through an ankle injury that ultimately resulted in surgery in December. Tannehill will have to hold off Levis to start the season under center. Training camp will provide more information, but Week 1 could be the start of the Will Levis era in Tennessee if the Titans are desperate to move on from Tannehill.
    • Can Treylon Burks take the next step?
      • Treylon Burks had an up-and-down rookie season after the Titans selected him with the 18th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Burks battled multiple injuries that slowed the start of his NFL career, finishing the season with 33 receptions on 54 targets for 444 yards and 1 touchdown in 11 games played. When he was active, Burks flashed the potential that made him a first-round draft pick. In the Titans' low-volume passing game, he generated at least six targets in four of the last five contests he was fully healthy for. The depth chart is clear for Burks to establish himself as the top target for the Titans this season. If he does so, it will be a huge boost for a Tennessee offense that is still searching for consistent production in the passing game since they traded A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022.
