Super Bowl Odds Update: Philly Beginning to Spiral

Navigating through this final trimester of the 2023-24 regular season, the San Francisco 49ers are officially the first team to clinch a playoff spot. As such, San Francisco remains the favorite to win Super Bowl LVIII at FanDuel Sportsbook (priced at +260 odds).

To the contrary, Week 14 also provided our first eliminations of the year. Officially, the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots will not be a part of the upcoming postseason tournament. Both sides will be looking for direction and identity moving forward.

Also over the previous weekend, the Dallas Cowboys leapfrogged the rival Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional standings after stomping the Birds at "Jerry World" on national television. Still, Philly remains the favorite to win the NFC East at -320; Dallas currently yields +240 odds in the division market.

Before Week 15 starts on Thursday from "Sin City," let's survey the list of recent movers in the Super Bowl LVIII betting market.

Notable Jumps

Cleveland Browns

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +3200
Last week: +6000

Harboring a blast from the past, the Cleveland Browns recently turned to Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco. The move proved advantageous, as Cleveland -- dealing with an onslaught of injuries -- edged out a pivotal win over a fellow AFC contender, the Jacksonville Jaguars. In that bid, the 38-year-old Flacco (same age as LeBron James) tossed three touchdowns and over 300 yards.

At 8-5 overall, you'd almost never know the Browns have started four different quarterbacks this season. Cleveland is well within the playoff picture, showing as the AFC five-seed.

Through the turmoil and offensive shuffling, the defense has steadied the ship. The Browns have allowed just 20.9 points per game (PPG) in 2023, stealing a dozen interceptions along the way. Edge rusher Myles Garrett is their undisputed leader; Garrett is the second favorite (+200) to win the AP Defensive Player of the Year at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Cleveland is still well behind the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC North's top spot, but the Browns will almost certainly earn a postseason birth. At numberFire, Cleveland is yielding an 88.7% chance to make the playoffs.

Being that the AFC seems a little more wide-open than originally anticipated, can the Browns run the table with a quarterback -- albeit, past his physical prime -- who has been there before?

Buffalo Bills

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +1800
Last week: +3500

Just when people were ready to write off the Buffalo Bills, that gritty team from Western New York surfaced again. In what can be considered the toughest part of their regular season schedule, the Bills are still standing tall. Over the past two weeks, Buffalo has split results with the Eagles (losing in overtime) and Kansas City Chiefs. Next, they'll host another contender when the Cowboys come to town on Sunday.

The Bills' Super Bowl odds ballooned all the way to +3500 after the recent loss in Philly. However, since defeating the defending champion Chiefs at Arrowhead, Buffalo's price to go all the way has dropped back to +1800.

Quarterback Josh Allen has taken his fair share of criticism in 2023, as his turnover tendencies have gotten in Buffalo's way at times. Still, Allen is playing quality ball overall. Through 13 contests, the Wyoming alum boasts the third-best QBR (70.6) in the NFL. Bigger picture, the Bills are ranked fifth in scoring (26.8 PPG) and total yardage.

Buffalo's defense did well last Sunday afternoon to stifle Patrick Mahomes and company. Getting the benefit of a late call, Bills Mafia allowed just 17 points to Kansas City. They will need a similar effort in Week 15, as Dallas' offense is the top scoring unit (32.4 PPG) in the league

Steep Drops

Philadelphia Eagles

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +750
Last week: +490

As noted, the Eagles have fallen from grace after taking back-to-back beatdowns from fellow NFC powerhouses. Two weeks ago, the 49ers came to "The Linc" and hung 42 on the Birds. From there, Philadelphia traveled to Dallas only to lose by three (or more) scores for the second straight game.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts has been hit-and-miss in 2023. He has still been wildly productive when running the ball, scoring 12 touchdowns on the ground, which is only one short of his career-best mark. However, when passing the football, he is averaging only 7.3 adjusted yards per attempt. From there, Hurts' 19:10 touchdown-to-interception ratio leaves more to be desired.

As reigning NFC champions, the Eagles came into the season with high hopes. Philly started 2023 with the second-best odds to hoist the next Lombardi Trophy. As it is now, they have fallen to fourth-best on the oddsboard.

Thus far, the Eagles have drawn the most public support at FanDuel Sportsbook in the Super Bowl market in terms of total bets and overall handle. Of course, those supporters will look for Philly to ramp up their defensive efforts. The Birds have surrendered 29 touchdowns through the air in 2023, which is the second-worst mark in the NFL.

Los Angeles Chargers

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +47000
Last week: +9500

Rooting for the Los Angeles Chargers certainly is not for the faint of heart. Never mind that the Bolts already left the majority of their fan base down in San Diego a few years ago, but they never seemed to put it all together on the football field.

The Chargers began the season in the top-10 Super Bowl odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, showing +2100 odds prior to Week 1. Fast-forward to now, and LAC has plummeted all the way down to 470-to-1 odds.

Despite having many talented players on the roster, the Chargers were already displaying mixed results, approaching Week 14 with a record of 5-7. Still, that was when they had their franchise quarterback, Justin Herbert. The fourth-year signal-caller has since fractured the index finger on his throwing hand, suffering the injury in last weekend's loss to the Denver Broncos.

In sad news for the league overall, Herbert has been placed on injured reserve. That pretty much nixes any chances of Los Angeles rallying through the final weeks of the schedule. Of course, 2023 has seen many starting signal callers go out for the season.
