3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Tuesday 9/12/23

Stacking is an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. Correlation drives upside, giving your lineups a slate-winning ceiling when your stacks explode.

This piece will do the digging and the dirty work each day to determine which stacks are worth rostering on FanDuel's main slate. While we want upside, we also need to factor in game theory, especially in a sport as random as baseball.

The MLB DFS heat map at numberFire is a quick way to get a feel for the overall slate and which offenses are in a good spot. You can also check out numberFire's daily fantasy baseball projections to identify the slate's best bats.

Today is a Coors Field day between the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs, so while you should of course look at those lineups, we will focus on three other teams since we don't need to tell you what you already know there.

Let's look at the top stacks for today's main slate.

Houston Astros

Implied Total: 5.26 | Opposing Pitcher: JP Sears (LHP)

The Houston Astros were one of the top teams worth stacking yesterday... until they weren't. The Oakland Athletics were able to blank the Astros on Monday, but it's hard to believe they can do that twice -- let alone keep the bats that quiet for that long.

The first reason is who the Astros are taking on today. JP Sears has been a strong pitcher in his last two outings, allowing only one run in 11 innings. But, prior to that, he allowed at least six runs in back-to-back starts. Sears is prone to giving up the home run ball as he's allowed 31 on the year -- that's the fifth-most of any starter in baseball in 2023.

The second reason is that Houston has had the second-best offense in baseball during the second half of the season. They are sporting a .360 wOBA with 90 home runs in 54 games. The Astros can and will get back on track.

Jose Altuve ($4,200) projects as the top option in DFS tonight, according to numberFire. He's expected to finish with 15.4 FanDuel points -- more than anyone else on the slate. The second baseman has been a big reason why the offense has made such a turnaround in the second half, sporting a .432 wOBA, 1.019 OPS, and .251 ISO in that time. He's smashing the baseball and has become one the top options for a reason.

It shouldn't come as much surprise that Yordan Alvarez ($4,100) is right behind Altuve as another top lineup selection. Alvarez has a .419 wOBA on the year while powering the Astros lineup in the middle of the order. He's one of the best hitters in baseball for a reason.

Kyle Tucker ($3,700), Alex Bregman ($3,600), Chas McCormick ($3,500), and Jeremy Pena ($2,700) all make sense to fill out an Astros stack.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Implied Total: 5.20 | Opposing Pitcher: Michael Wacha (RHP)

Few offenses pack a punch like the Los Angeles Dodgers, so it should come as no surprise that they're a top stacking option again for tonight's slate.

The San Diego Padres will send out Michael Wacha to oppose the Dodgers. Wacha has had a good season so far if you look at his ERA alone (2.99), but the advanced metrics tell you that he's certainly overproducing compared to where his numbers should be. The SIERA and FIP are at 4.53 and 3.94 clips, which gives a good signal of the Dodgers hopefully taking advantage tonight. Wacha has allowed a homer in four straight starts, as well.

Tell me if you've heard this one before -- Mookie Betts ($4,300) is the best play on the Dodgers tonight. I know, I know -- crazy. The all-around former MVP remains the major force of the Dodgers' lineup day in and day out. Betts had a huge game in the first of the series, hitting a home run and double while totaling four RBIs. That brings Betts up to 39 dingers on the year to go with his .313 batting average and .427 wOBA. Those are otherworldly numbers for him. Get Betts in your lineups. numberFire's model has him projected for 14.3 FanDuel points -- the most of any Dodger.

Freddie Freeman ($4,200) is always a fit as his 25 home runs and .412 wOBA illustrate just how good he's been in his second campaign with Los Angeles.

When it comes to fill out your stack with one or two more players, picking one of Max Muncy ($3,600) or Will Smith ($3,400) makes a ton of sense because of where they hit in the lineup. They'll have plenty of opportunities with Betts and Freeman ahead of them to drive in runs.

To save salary, Chris Taylor ($3,000) and James Outman ($2,800) are always fine options too.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Implied Total: 5.04| Opposing Pitcher: Jose Butto (RHP)

The Arizona Diamondbacks offense has lost a lot of the steam they had in the first half of the season but they still possess a lineup that can make an impact -- especially today.

Arizona will take on the New York Mets and their starter Jose Butto. To say Butto has been a bit lucky would be an understatement. The righty has a 3.86 ERA on the year, but his SIERA and FIP show that he's been a lot worse. Through 21 innings, the SIERA is up to a stunning 6.00 while the FIP sits at a 4.50. Those aren't great numbers, which should be good news for the D-Backs tonight.

Tommy Pham ($3,200) has quietly had a strong season as his .344 wOBA and 16 home runs are good signs of that. numberFire recommends Pham as a choice for the D-Backs stack; he's the top-projected player at 12.4 FanDuel points.

Corbin Carroll ($3,900) is the highest-salaried batter in the lineup, and while he may not be the highest projected of the day, he should be also featured in any Arizona stack that is considered. The five-tool player has 24 home runs, 69 RBIs, and 47 stolen bases. He's a star.

Other players to consider here include Ketel Marte ($3,500), Christian Walker ($3,300), Lourdes Gurriel ($3,100), and Evan Longoria ($2,300).
