3 Best Bets for Wednesday's Subway Series Matchup: Mets at Yankees (7/26/23)

Whether it is on ice (New York Islanders-New York Rangers), hardwood (New York Knicks-Brooklyn Nets) or grass (see below), New York City's Subway Series always brings together the liveliest of support.

After splitting two games at Citi Field this past June, the New York Mets (47-53) will make the 10-mile trip from Queens to Bronx to face the New York Yankees (53-48): bing bong!

In yesterday's initial meeting at Yankee Stadium, "Polar Bear" Pete Alonso stole the show behind two homers and five total RBI. Mets utilityman Jeff McNeil added three RBI of his own while Justin Verlander rolled over the Bronx Bomber lineup. Thankfully, we were on the Mets moneyline yesterday, as well as over 8.5 runs.

To keep a good week going, let us take a glimpse into the markets at FanDuel Sportsbook to find the three best bets for Wednesday's Subway Series matchup.

Mets Moneyline (+128)

Southpaw Carlos Rodon (5.93 SIERA through three starts this season) will start on the mound for the Yanks while 12-year MLB veteran Jose Quintana gets the ball for the Mets.

Transparently, neither hurler has logged a win in 2023. Rodon has had a rough time since returning from forearm and back injuries, so I don't mind picking against him at +128 (Yankees moneyline is -152 on Wednesday).

Despite their overall record, the Metropolitans are still a potent lineup on any given night. With hitters like Alonso, McNeil, Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Alvarez, this team has pop. The Mets have blasted 126 home runs this season, which is the fifth-most in the Senior Circuit.

Additionally, the Mets have been proficient at drawing bases on balls against left-handed pitching this year, sporting an 8.8% walk rate in the split for 2023. Coincidentally, Rodon has had trouble issuing walks in his brief time this year -- he is currently walking 13.8% of batters, which is a career-worst clip.

Until reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge returns, the Yankees will have a tough time getting the team back on track against stiff competition. At a favorable price of +128, I like New York's National League ballclub on Wednesday.

Over 8.5 Runs (-118)

We saw the Mets defeat the Yanks by a score of 9-3 on Tuesday, which easily cashed the over 8.5 runs play. Being that conditions are still warm in the Big Apple (mid-to-high 80s at first pitch), I like the over again for Wednesday at the intimately confined Yankee Stadium.

As mentioned, the probable pitchers for tonight's tilt -- Rodon and Quintana -- have had their struggles in 2023. Considering the small ballpark, the weather, and the presence of power hitters, I am going to let it ride with over 8.5.

Additionally, three of the past four games for the Mets have gone over the run total. For the Bombers, the over has hit in four of the last five contests.

Pete Alonso To Record 2+ Total Bases (+120)

Market stipulation: Total Bases are recorded through hits by the listed player. They do not include walks, HBPs, stolen bases, reach on errors, or fielder's choices.

Considering Alonso's offensive output last night (recording nine total bases with two home runs and a single), I believe there is high value on him for Wednesday, especially in the prop market. He is showing +120 odds to record two or more bases (see above stipulation).

Alonso is in the midst of a five-game hitting streak. If he can produce at least a double or multiple base hits on Wednesday, we will have an easy winner. Genuinely, this one feels simple. Against the southpaw Rodon, Alonso will have the platoon advantage early in the game.

On the year, Alonso is showcasing an .820 OPS with a .504 slugging percentage. Remember, any extra-base hit from the Polar Bear will cash this market instantly. Given the fact that he has a Statcast hard-hit rate of 40.2%, I love this prop on Alonso.
