Sam Darnold is headed to the Carolina Panthers after being traded by the New York Jets. The former No. 3 pick never enjoyed much success in New York, and a breakup was inevitable after the team landed the second pick in a draft with a loaded quarterback class. Now, the Jets can select a new franchise QB to pin their hopes on.

The Panthers are clearly excited by their move to land Darnold. They had a flurry of tweets welcoming the QB to the team, including one hilarious announcement post.

The Panthers borrowed the "Out Indefinitely - Mononucleosis" meme that popped up during the 2019 season to actually announce their trade for the quarterback. Carolina's version reads "Out of New York - Indefinitely." It's a fun nod and one fans should appreciate.

Carolina is certainly trying to hype up the trade after sending out a sixth-, second- and fourth-round pick in exchange for Darnold. That's a decent price to pay for a QB who'll be competing for the starting job with Teddy Bridgewater. Darnold didn't exactly light it up for the Jets, either, so it's a risk for the Panthers.

Still, after Bridgewater's play in 2020, there should be optimism that a QB competition will help make Carolina better in 2021. They can also now use the No. 8 pick in the draft to target an elite skill player to elevate the offense around their stater next season.
