PGA DFS: FedEx St. Jude Championship Stud, Mid-Tier, and Value Picks
The FedExCup playoffs are here.
And there are just three weeks until the final flag is pulled on the 2022-23 PGA Tour season.
There's not much of a gap between the end of this season and the start of the next, of course, but let's get sentimental while we can.
To help with your prep for this week, you can also check out my course notes, keys stats, and course history rundown and my win simulation model for the week.
FedEx St. Jude Championship DFS Picks
These picks stand out relative to their FanDuel daily fantasy golf salary based on my stats model, which accounts for the most important stats for this week's event. All stats cited below originate at datagolf and reference ranks relative to the field over the past 50 rounds. References to my combo model refer to a combination of long-term, field-adjusted form, key stat performance, and hole-by-hole-level strokes gained data.
FedEx St. Jude Championship Studs
Scottie Scheffler ($12,300 | +600)
There's nobody close to Scheffler in terms of daily fantasy value. There just isn't. He leads the field over the past 50 rounds in strokes gained: off the tee, approach, and around-the-green. That's disgustingly good. He's a pretty accurate driver (29th in the field), and he does have two top-15 finishes at WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitationals, too. He hasn't putted these greens very well, and the putting is the only reason he doesn't have more wins this season.
Rickie Fowler ($10,600 | +3000)
Fowler's resurgence has stemmed largely from great iron play, and he ranks 12th in the field in strokes gained: approach over the past 50 rounds. He's also top-10 in both short-game stats. Fowler has played this course a lot and has some good finishes. With the form he's in and with the salary he has, he's a core-level play.
Others to Consider:
- Jon Rahm ($12,100 | +850) - Model likes him; good form at the course; form still great overall.
- Patrick Cantlay ($11,800 | +1400) - 5th in ball-striking; 3rd T2G.
- Wyndham Clark ($10,400 | +3000) - 10th in ball-striking in an elite field.
FedEx St. Jude Championship Mid-Range Plays
Russell Henley ($9,900 | +5000)
After a near win, Henley finds himself salaried in the mid-range for this week. Henley is really accurate (2nd) and a good overall ball-striker (16th). He has a lack of good form at the course (three missed cuts in five starts) but is golfing better now than during most of that sample.
Corey Conners ($9,400 | +6500)
Conners is the best ball-striker in the $9,000 range (7th among the field), better even than Cameron Young ($9,800). Conners' issues come with the short-game (61st in the field). We've seen him make five cuts in six starts at TPC Southwind, as well.
Others to Consider:
- Cameron Young ($9,800 | +4000) - Ball-striking is there (11th).
- Keegan Bradley ($9,600 | +7500) - A little reliant on short-game (7th) lately but still solid.
- Denny McCarthy ($9,300 | +9000) - Best short-game in the field; accurate driver.
FedEx St. Jude Championship Value Plays
Sahith Theegala ($9,000 | +11000)
The value tier is pretty brutal this week in terms of win upside. There just frankly isn't much whether you look at my win simulation model or the FanDuel Sportsbook odds. With that said -- and with the fact that you can't just punt over and over again in no-cut events -- Theegala makes some sense at the salary. His short-game is carrying him lately. However, he did finish 13th here a year ago and overall has some of the best win odds among the value tier.
Alex Smalley ($8,100 | +15000)
If you aren't getting much safety or a ceiling in the upper $8,000 range, why not jump down the salary pool more? Exactly. Smalley ranks 22nd in strokes gained: ball-striking over the past 50 rounds, and while he's not a great putter, he is due for some level of regression soon enough.
Others to Consider:
- Brendon Todd ($8,400 | +12000) - 3rd-best short-gamer in the field; some good finishes here in the past (three top-20s).
- Adam Schenk ($7,700 | +20000) - Solid irons and putting, which means a path to upside; four top-10s in past eight starts.
- Nick Taylor ($7,500 | +22000) - 34th in approach and 21st in short-game.
