Nuggets vs. Heat Game 5 Analysis
The Nuggets backed up their impressive Game 3 victory with a second consecutive road win in Game 4 to take a commanding lead in the series.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, Denver jumped out to a lead with seven and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter and never looked back. As they always seem to do, the Heat pulled the game within a couple of possessions multiple times, but the Nuggets responded to each push, eventually pulling away down the stretch to secure a 13-point victory.
Denver's success in Game 4 came as a result of excellent three-point shooting -- and exceptional play from Aaron Gordon. The Nuggets shot 14-28 (50.0%) from behind the arc. Except for Michael Porter Jr. (0-3), each of Denver's starters made at least two three-pointers, with Bruce Brown Jr. shooting 3-5 (60.0%) from three-point range off the bench.
Gordon was electric in his 42 minutes played, producing a game-high plus/minus of +29 with 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. In an odd twist, Nikola Jokic recorded the lowest plus/minus of Denver's starters (+9) with 23 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks.
Miami failed to match Denver's efficiency from behind the arc, shooting 8-25 (32.0%) from three-point range. The Heat have now scored less than 96 points in three of four games this series.
Bam Adebayo in particular struggled, committing 7 turnovers in 44 minutes played, resulting in a plus/minus of -18. Gabe Vincent posted the lowest plus/minus in Game 4 (-21) with just 2 points scored in 19 minutes played.
The Heat leaned heavily on their bench on Friday; Kyle Lowry and Caleb Marin both played 33 minutes compared to just 19 for Vincent and Strus. Cody Zeller (+5), Lowry (+3), and Martin (+1) were the only Heat players to post a positive plus/minus.
Jimmy Butler came close to a triple-double, with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists in 45 minutes played, but it simply wasn't enough to counteract Miami's 14 turnovers and the Nuggets' efficient shooting performance.
Now the series shifts back to Denver where the Nuggets have only lost once this postseason. Of course, that loss came against Miami in Game 2, but the Nuggets have been a better side at home all season and now have two chances to close out the NBA Finals at Ball Arena.
For just the second time this postseason, the Heat face an elimination game. In their first, they dominated the Boston Celtics on the road in Game 7 to win the Eastern Conference Finals.
Miami has been resilient in their underdog role throughout the playoffs, but winning three in a row -- including two on the road -- against this Denver side is a herculean task.
As it stands, the Nuggets are favorites to win Game 5 and the NBA Finals (-6000), per the NBA Finals odds at FanDuel Sportsbook.
